Boeing Resumes Critical ETOPS Testing for 777-9 Program
The Boeing 777-9 program has reached a significant milestone as it resumes Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards (ETOPS) testing. This phase is crucial for long-haul twin-engine aircraft, demonstrating that an aircraft can safely continue flying after the failure of one engine.
Boeing has added a seventh flight-test aircraft to its 777-9 program, which will focus on function and reliability trials as well as ETOPS certification flights. The expanded test fleet is expected to help complete the remaining certification work ahead of the aircraft's planned first deliveries in 2027.
Lufthansa is set to become the world's first airline to place the Boeing 777-9 into commercial service, with its first production aircraft already completing its maiden flight and featuring Lufthansa's fully installed passenger cabin. The certification program has accumulated around 4,800 flight-test hours, making it one of the most extensively tested aircraft Boeing has ever developed.
