Boeing Safety Culture Under Scrutiny Following Whistleblower's Death
A new Netflix documentary titled Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing is set to premiere on August 19. The film investigates Boeing's safety culture following the 2024 death of whistleblower John Barnett, a former quality manager who had warned about potential oxygen system failures in Boeing's Dreamliners.
Barnett's warnings were later confirmed during an incident involving an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 plane in January 2024. The documentary includes testimony from insiders who faced retaliation for speaking up and highlights systemic quality failures, including faulty oxygen systems and door plug issues.
Freefall is a sequel to the 2022 documentary Downfall, which covered the 737 MAX crashes. United Airlines had also found similar door-plug installation issues during inspections, raising concerns about unresolved manufacturing flaws in active fleets.
