Boeing Scandal Deepens as Former CEO Dave Calhoun Resigns Amid Safety Concerns
The Boeing whistleblower scandal continues to unfold as two key figures are at the center of attention. Former CEO Dave Calhoun was appointed in 2020 after Dennis Muilenburg's departure following the 2018 Lion Air and 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crashes that led to 346 fatalities.
Under Calhoun, Boeing's focus shifted from ensuring plane safety to appeasing investors and boosting stock prices. His yearly bonuses and salary rose significantly, reaching $32.8 million in 2023, a 45% increase from the previous year.
Congress grilled Calhoun during a Senate hearing, with Missouri senator Josh Hawley accusing him of 'cutting corners' and prioritizing profits over safety.
In response to public scrutiny, Calhoun stepped down as CEO in December 2023. He has since taken on a new role at Virginia Tech's Board of Visitors, chairing the Compliance, Audit and Risk Committee.
