Boeing Secures $75 Million Contract for Long-Range Precision-Guided Munitions
The US Air Force has awarded Boeing a $75 million contract to acquire the BSU-111/B PDU Joint Direct Attack Munition Long Range (JDAM LR), a precision-guided munition. The JDAM LR combines existing JDAM infrastructure with a wing kit and compact turbojet engine, enabling high-volume production and rapid integration with any aircraft capable of carrying conventional JDAM.
According to Boeing's vice president Bob Ciesla, the first production contract is a major milestone for the JDAM LR programme. 'This demonstrates our ability to deliver long-range precision-strike capability at a significantly lower cost,' said Ciesla.
The system recently completed its first flight test off the coast of California, meeting the objectives of sustaining powered flight on a predefined test profile and using military-code GPS navigation while maintaining consistent guidance directly to its target.
