Boeing Seeks Growth Amid Legacy Liabilities and Regulatory Scrutiny

Boeing's recent weeks have been marked by a tug-of-war between new growth opportunities and lingering legacy headaches. The company's acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems has turned into a financial drag, with hundreds of millions of dollars in extra liabilities surfacing after the deal closed.

The accounting rules bury these costs in acquisition footnotes rather than the income statement, which still weigh on sentiment as Boeing shares remain down year-on-year.

Regulatory and safety issues resurfaced when Boeing disclosed it paid a $3.1 million FAA fine, the maximum civil penalty, tied to safety violations including the 2024 Alaska Airlines incident.

However, investors are still finding reasons for optimism as Boeing delivered the final three mPower broadband satellites for SES, reinforcing its space credentials, and lined up cargo deals, including Ethiopian Airlines' planned purchase of up to 10 long-haul freighters and Afcom's agreement for up to four 777F jets.

Strategically, Boeing is betting big on Africa's long-term growth, projecting the continent's commercial fleet will more than double from 755 aircraft in 2025 to 1,625 by 2045, with roughly three-quarters of new planes expected to be single-aisle models serving domestic and regional traffic.

Despite an 8-11% share price decline over the past year, Wall Street remains bullish on Boeing, with analysts keeping a Strong Buy rating on BA, with 17 Buys and just one Hold in the last three months. The average price target of about $274 per share points to roughly 30-31% upside from current levels.
