Boeing Unveils Affordable Radar Seeker with Modular Design
Boeing has unveiled an ultra-low-cost radar seeker called ULCS (Ultra Low-Cost Seeker), which is designed to be used in various military systems, including air and missile defense interceptors, guided bombs, and cruise missiles. The company claims that the seeker's cost is a major obstacle to its widespread adoption, as it is one of the most expensive components of a guided weapon.
Boeing built ULCS using commercial parts adapted for military use, making it an active seeker that emits its own radar signal rather than relying on one from an aircraft or ground station. The company says that the seeker's modular design allows for reuse across different weapons systems, reducing development and production costs.
The ULCS underwent several tests earlier this summer, including a flight test aboard a Beechcraft 1900, where it successfully tracked targets in various environments. Boeing also tested the seeker at Spaceport America in New Mexico, where it demonstrated its ability to track moving targets in different weather conditions.
Bob Ciesla, vice president of Boeing Precision Engagement Systems, said that the company is developing ULCS with the goal of sharing a common sensor architecture across several programs. Steve Wright, senior manager for weapon sensors and advanced guidance, stated that while there is still more work to be done, the rapid testing proves that this capability is real and will change how they look at seeker affordability.
