Boeing Whistleblower Documentary Explores Safety Concerns and Personal Toll
A new Netflix documentary titled 'Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing' explores the story of John Barnett, a whistleblower who died by suicide in 2024 after providing deposition materials in his case against Boeing. Barnett's death was widely reported on and sparked rumors, but the documentary focuses on the events leading up to it rather than speculating about its cause.
Barnett had worked as a quality manager at Boeing and witnessed incidents that displayed a lack of safety and quality control within the company. He faced pushback and threats of retaliation when reporting these issues to management, which is a theme explored in the documentary.
The film also features interviews with other whistleblowers, including Josh Dean and Santiago Paredes, who worked for Spirit AeroSystems and supplied parts to Boeing. Paredes earned the nickname 'showstopper' for slowing down production due to his concerns about safety, which he shares in an interview in the documentary.
Naoise Ryan, the widow of Mick Ryan, one of the victims of the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX crash, is also featured in the film. She and other family members of the crash victims worked together to try to bring Boeing to justice for its safety issues.
