Boeing Whistleblowers Speak Out in 'Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing'
Rory Kennedy's latest documentary, Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing, premiered on Netflix on August 19, 2026. The film is a sequel to her 2022 documentary Downfall, which examined the two Boeing 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people. In Freefall, Kennedy trains her lens on the whistleblowers who say the aviation giant put profits ahead of safety.
The heart of the film is John Barnett, a former Boeing quality manager who spent more than three decades at the company before becoming a whistleblower. Barnett flagged safety problems and appeared in Downfall, but his story takes a tragic turn when he was found dead in March 2024 while in Charleston, South Carolina, for a deposition in his retaliation lawsuit against Boeing.
Kennedy argues that Boeing's treatment of Barnett contributed to his death, which is what compelled her to make the sequel. The film alleges a culture at Boeing that punished workers for raising safety concerns and prioritized profits over people. Through interviews with quality managers and engineers, Freefall paints a picture of a company that cut corners even as it publicly promised to reform.
