The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted Boeing an amended type certificate for the new 737-7 airplane, clearing it for commercial service.

This certification is a significant milestone for Boeing's 737 Max program, which has been under development since 2018. The 737-7 model offers 135 to 160 seats in a two-class configuration and provides about 10% more range potential than its siblings.

The FAA certification process involved comprehensive testing and analysis, including over 1,000 hours of flight and ground testing, extensive system safety analysis, and human factors reviews. Boeing also implemented updates to the airplane's final configuration, including an updated engine anti-ice system to address a potential condition discovered during flight testing.

Boeing president and CEO Stephanie Pope said that this certification validates the rigor of their airplane's design and recognizes the determination and resilience of their 737 Max development team. The company is now preparing for delivery of the first 737-7 airplanes, including one to launch customer Southwest Airlines.
