Boeing's 737 MAX 7 Receives FAA Certification

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified Boeing's 737 MAX 7, marking a significant milestone for the American planemaker after years of delay. The certification process was more stringent due to two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019, as well as scrutiny of Boeing's production and quality systems following a mid-air incident in January 2024.

Boeing had initially expected approval before the end of 2022 but faced numerous setbacks. The company must now implement key improvements, including updates to the flight-control software, flight crew alerting system, and engine anti-ice system, as recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The MAX 7 offers 135 to 160 seats and has a range potential about 10% greater than other MAX planes. Boeing has built approximately 30 of these aircraft, which are awaiting delivery, while also preparing for the launch customer, Southwest Airlines.

Southwest Airlines expressed its satisfaction with the approval and expects the plane to enter service in the coming months. The FAA Deputy Administrator, Chris Rocheleau, believes that approval of the larger MAX 10 will follow closely behind.
