Boeing's 747SP: A Short-Lived Solution for Ultra-Long Routes

Boeing created the 747SP in the 1970s to fly ultra-long routes. The company shrank the fuselage of the original 747 by 48 feet, while keeping its 195-foot wingspan.

This modification enabled a range of 6,650 nautical miles, boosting climb performance as well. Airlines such as Pan Am and Iran Air requested it for nonstop transcontinental flights, but Qantas used it for short-runway Pacific routes.

Despite its technical merits, only 45 units were built, far below Boeing’s initial forecast of 200 units.
