Boeing's 777-9 Program Grounded by Certification Delays
Boeing's 777-9 program is facing an unexpected challenge due to the lengthy certification process. Over 30 completed jets have been parked in Washington State, awaiting modification before delivery to customers.
The issue arises because the production specifications for these planes were not finalized during development. This means they require significant modifications to meet certification standards.
Despite logging over 4,800 flying hours and completing 50% of the testing process, the aircraft remain grounded.
Lufthansa, set to become the launch operator, is in talks with Boeing regarding accepting these modified planes. Carsten Spohr, Lufthansa's CEO, has stated that if his airline accepts early versions requiring modernization, he expects some financial compensation.
Emirates Airlines, which ordered 235 777-9 family planes, has shown a more aggressive stance on the matter.
