Boeing's 777X Certification Snag: 30 Airframes Parked Awaiting Modifications
The Boeing 777X program has hit a snag due to the prolonged certification process. More than 30 completed or substantially completed 777-9 airframes are parked in Washington State, awaiting modifications to bring them up to the final production standard.
Lufthansa and Emirates have expressed concerns about accepting these early-built aircraft, which can carry significant financial and operational disadvantages. Lufthansa is discussing with Boeing which early-built aircraft it will accept and which it will not, with financial compensation required if it takes aircraft that need to be modernized.
Despite this issue, the certification progress for the 777-9 has been steady, with over 4,800 flight-test hours accumulated by the test fleet. Boeing continues to target first deliveries in 2027, and Lufthansa expects the first aircraft to arrive within that timeframe.
