Boeing's 777X Delayed Again: 30 Aircraft Need Major Overhaul

The Boeing 777X program has been plagued by delays and setbacks, and the latest issue is a major modification requirement for 30 already-built aircraft. According to CEO Kelly Ortberg, these planes will need a 'change incorporation' process before they can be delivered to airlines.

Ortberg explained that the rework involves updating early-production planes with the latest design changes to ensure they meet current certification standards. This means older airframes require more extensive modifications, including structural changes, while newer builds need only minor software and systems updates.

The Boeing 777X was launched in 2013 as a natural evolution of the successful 777 family, promising enhanced fuel efficiency, an updated wing design, and new engines. However, the program has been delayed multiple times, with deliveries now expected to begin in 2027 following years of production.
