Boeing's 777X Grounded Again Amid Thrust Link Troubles

Boeing's 777X program has been plagued by delays and technical issues for over a decade, but it wasn't until a routine inspection in 2024 that engineers discovered a critical problem with the aircraft's thrust link. The issue arose during a test flight in Hawaii when inspectors found a severed thrust link on one of the planes, which prompted Boeing to ground its entire test fleet.

The damage was limited to the left thrust link, and upon further inspection, it was determined that the cracks were caused by a unique combination of conditions involving a protective blanket fitted around hydraulic tubes near the thrust link. The blanket, normally spaced a few inches away from the component, had been sitting mere millimeters apart in this case, causing high-speed air to be forced through a narrow space and vibrate the titanium component.

To test their theory, Boeing's engineers used powerful leaf blowers to replicate the airflow conditions and see whether they could produce the same effect. The results supported their hypothesis, and the planemaker was able to develop modifications to prevent the issue from happening again in the future.
