Boeing's F-15 Contract: A $131 Billion Ceiling with a Caveat

Boeing recently received an F-15 contract with a staggering ceiling figure of $131.23 billion, but investors should not get too excited just yet.

The actual amount obligated is much lower, at $343,740, and the company will only receive this money when task orders are placed and funded one at a time.

This is an example of an Indefinite-Delivery, Indefinite-Quantity (IDIQ) contract, which allows the government to place orders with Boeing up to the maximum aggregate value without having to negotiate a new contract for each order.

While this may seem like a guarantee of future revenue for Boeing, it's actually just an exclusive lane that Boeing has been granted. The company will need to execute on these task orders profitably in order to realize any significant benefits from the contract.

In fact, Boeing's Defense, Space & Security segment has been struggling with profitability issues, including a $280 million charge related to the VC-25B presidential aircraft program.
