Boeing's decision to install chevron-edged engine nacelles on several models has come under scrutiny, as it resulted in a 0.5% thrust penalty during takeoff and climb phases.
The design, developed by NASA research, was intended to dampen jet exhaust turbulence and reduce noise levels near urban airports.
Boeing applied the chevrons to the 787, 747-8, and 737 MAX families, prioritizing community relations over performance. This deliberate trade-off allowed for measurable noise reduction, but at a cost of approximately 0.5% less thrust per engine.
Airbus declined the design, focusing instead on fuel economy and maximum efficiency through unmodified exhaust flow.
