Boeing's Strategic Sell-Off: $55M Stake in Archer Aviation Sparks Turnaround Hopes
Boeing has made significant moves in recent weeks, but one development stands out - the sale of three aerospace and eVTOL businesses to Archer Aviation. The deal, announced on August 10, involves Wisk, Insitu, and SkyGrid being merged into Archer, with Boeing retaining a nearly 20% stake in the company. In exchange for these businesses, plus an agreement to invest $55 million in equity, Boeing will receive newly issued shares and warrants in Archer.
The terms of the deal position Boeing well to benefit from Archer's future growth and commercialization. Additionally, Boeing retains the right to use Wisk's autonomous flight technology for its own aircraft products. While this deal could yield billions of dollars in value for Boeing, it may not be enough to make a significant impact on the company's market cap, which stands at $170 billion.
The sale of these businesses allows Boeing to focus on its core operations and remove potential distractions from its turnaround efforts. The company has made progress in getting its commercial aircraft business back on track, with recent FAA approval for the 737 MAX 7. However, Boeing's stock price already reflects a significant premium, trading at around 77 times trailing-12-month earnings.
