Boeing's T-45 Goshawk: The Unlikely Trainer Behind Every U.S. Carrier Pilot

The U.S. Navy's T-45 Goshawk is a carrier-capable jet trainer that has been in service since the early 1990s. It was developed from the British Aerospace Hawk, which first flew in 1974 and entered RAF service as a fast-jet trainer and light attack aircraft.

The Navy needed to replace an ageing patchwork of jet trainers with a single modern aircraft that could take a student from basic jets all the way to landing on a moving aircraft carrier. In 1981, it chose the Hawk for this purpose, which was then rebuilt by McDonnell Douglas to meet the demands of carrier operations.

The result was the T-45 Goshawk, which has a strengthened airframe, an arrestor hook, and hard points to absorb the shock of catapult launches. It also features new gear and reworked low-speed aerodynamics for stable and controllable approaches at sea.

The Goshawk is subsonic and unarmed, but it's built for reliability, predictable handling, and low running cost rather than raw performance. Today, it remains the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps' only carrier-capable jet trainer, with around 221 aircraft built since its introduction in 1988.
