Boeing's Ultra Low-Cost Seeker Proves Its Mettle in Rigorous Testing Campaign
Boeing has made significant progress in developing its Ultra Low-Cost Seeker (ULCS), a radar technology designed to provide an affordable solution for military and defense applications. The ULCS underwent rigorous testing, including ground, flight, and tracking tests, which demonstrated its ability to detect and track targets in both land and maritime environments.
The seeker was tested in various scenarios, including captive-carry testing aboard a Beechcraft 1900 aircraft and high-speed flight trials aboard a scaled rocket. Boeing also conducted evaluations in an anechoic chamber and at Spaceport America in New Mexico, where the ULCS successfully tracked an unmanned aerial vehicle from the ground and monitored a reflector drone.
The company's goal is to deliver a lower-cost seeker capability for precision-guided munitions that can track moving targets and support air, land, and maritime strike missions in various weather conditions. Boeing aims to achieve this through a modular architecture designed for streamlined manufacturing and the use of commercially available components adapted for military applications.
According to Bob Ciesla, vice president of precision engagement systems at Boeing, the company is pursuing a common sensor architecture built on Weapons Open Systems Architecture standards that can be shared among multiple programs.
