Brazil's Indigenous Peoples Face Escalating Violence Over Land Rights
The Amazon region is witnessing an alarming surge in violence against indigenous peoples in Brazil. According to Cardinal Leonardo Steiner, the Archbishop of Manaus, this escalation is a result of their lands being coveted by society.
Cardinal Steiner attributed the tension surrounding human dignity to the fact that indigenous people suffer most when their ancestral territories are threatened.
The Franciscan friar has been leading the Manaus archdiocese since 2019, when he was appointed by Pope Francis. In 2022, he was created a cardinal, becoming the first from the Amazon region.
