Breakthrough Cancer Vaccine Reduces Death Risk by Nearly Half
A new cancer vaccine, developed by pharmaceutical giant Merck and mRNA vaccine company Moderna, has shown significant promise in reducing the risk of death from skin cancer. The personalized therapy, called intismeran, was administered along with the immunotherapy drug Keytruda to patients with melanoma.
The study found that when used together, the vaccine reduced the risk of death due to recurrence by 49% and the risk of death due to spread by 59%. This is a major breakthrough in cancer research, as it represents the first personalized mRNA treatment designed specifically for an individual patient's cancer.
Intismeran works by identifying the unique mutations in a patient's tumor sample and using those to create a vaccine that teaches the immune system to recognize and attack the cancer cells. This approach is significant because each person's cancer has its own distinct fingerprint, making a one-size-fits-all treatment less effective.
While this breakthrough is promising, oncologists in India note that the current trial results are only applicable to skin cancer, which is relatively rare in the country. Additionally, the cost of Keytruda and the new therapy may be prohibitively expensive for many patients.
