Breakthrough in Personalized Cancer Vaccines Offers Hope for Patients
Scientists have made a significant breakthrough in personalized cancer vaccines, providing hope for cancer patients. A large trial involving over 1,000 patients showed that the vaccine, developed by Moderna and Merck, helped prevent the return and spread of melanoma.
The vaccine combines a personalized mRNA vaccine with Merck's immunotherapy drug, Keytruda. Unlike chemotherapy, which kills both healthy and cancerous cells, personalized cancer vaccines are designed to train the immune system to target mutations specific to a person's tumour.
The treatment uses up to nine doses of Keytruda, given every six weeks, together with up to nine doses of a customised mRNA vaccine. The vaccine is designed based on the specific mutations in a patient's tumour and instructs the immune system to attack the patient's cancer cells.
Researchers have described the findings as 'a big deal for the field in general.' The approach could change the way cancer is treated more broadly, with potential applications in various types of cancer. Moderna and Merck are already conducting trials of the treatment in other cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer, bladder cancer, and kidney cancer.
