BriaCell Challenges Merck and Moderna with Personalized Melanoma Vaccine
BriaCell Therapeutics is making strides in the development of its personalized cancer vaccine, Bria-MEL+, for melanoma. The company's technology differs from that of Merck and Moderna, which recently announced impressive Phase III trial results for their mRNA-based melanoma vaccine.
According to Dr. William V. Williams, president and CEO of BriaCell, the company is developing a 'personalized but off-the-shelf cellular immunotherapy for cancer.' This approach involves using premanufactured cell lines selected through patient HLA matching, eliminating the need for individualized manufacturing.
The personalized whole-cell melanoma immunotherapy vaccine candidate has achieved a key genetic engineering milestone, advancing it toward clinical development. With an estimated 112,000 new cases of melanomas to be diagnosed in the US in 2026, BriaCell believes its approach can broaden access, shorten treatment timelines, and reduce costs.
