Brin Spends $100M to Block California Billionaire Tax
Google co-founder Sergey Brin has spent over $100 million to fight California's proposed billionaire tax, known as Prop 40. This tax would impose a one-time 5% levy on the net worth of around 200 billionaires living in the state.
The funding from the proposed tax is expected to go towards California's healthcare programs. However, Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed his opposition to the tax and instead advocates for a 'national billionaires' tax.'
Newsom argues that the current system allows ultra-wealthy individuals to borrow against their stock portfolios while reporting no taxable income. He believes this 'tax-free lifestyle loan' is unfair and should be ended.
