Broadcom Gains Ground Over Nvidia as Custom Chips Gain Traction
Nvidia and Broadcom are two prominent players in the chipmaking industry, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators. While Nvidia's business is broad-based with a focus on graphics processing units (GPUs), Broadcom specializes in designing application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for narrow workloads.
Broadcom has been gaining traction by catering to hyperscalers and frontier labs, partnering with companies like Alphabet and Meta Platforms. Orders for its custom AI chips are increasing, contributing to its impressive growth.
Nvidia's data center revenue grew 117% year-over-year in the latest quarter, but Broadcom's AI semiconductor division saw a 221% increase in the same period. Both companies have significant growth potential, with Nvidia expecting a 70% growth rate in its next fiscal year and Broadcom targeting substantial growth in 2027.
A key metric that tips the scales in favor of Broadcom is its valuation. With both stocks trading below 20 times next year's earnings, they have ample room for price appreciation. Based on their rapid growth rates, a forward earnings multiple of 30 would be reasonable. This would imply a doubling of Nvidia's value and over 50% upside for Broadcom.
