Burry Takes Victory Lap as $3 Trillion AI Spending Tab Comes into Focus
Famed investor Michael Burry is taking credit for predicting that tech giants have accumulated $3 trillion in future artificial intelligence spending that remains hidden off their official balance sheets. Burry shared a graphic from a recent Wall Street Journal report, which highlights the significant difference between publicly reported financial obligations and actual commitments.
The WSJ analysis found that companies like Alphabet Inc., Amazon.com Inc., Meta Platforms Inc., and Microsoft Corp. have combined $248 billion in lease liabilities and $356 billion in long-term debt on their balance sheets. However, a much larger portion of their financial commitments remain hidden beneath the surface.
According to the WSJ data, these companies have about $1.2 trillion in obligations from leases that haven't started and another $1.9 trillion in purchase commitments. Alphabet leads the spending surge, with an enormous $811 billion in hidden purchase commitments.
