Businesses Overpaying for AI Tools Amid Subscription Growth
A growing number of American businesses are paying for at least one AI subscription, according to Ramp's data. The corporate card platform saw adoption cross the 50% mark in March, up from 35% a year earlier.
Half of these companies have adopted AI features through their existing subscriptions rather than standalone products. Microsoft and Google, for example, have integrated AI capabilities into their business apps. Microsoft's Business tiers now include Copilot Chat at no extra cost, while Google has moved Gemini add-on features directly into Workspace editions.
However, there are instances where companies pay extra for AI tools they may not need. For instance, Microsoft sells its standalone Copilot product for $18 per user per month, which is more than the free tier covers. Similarly, some companies might be paying for specialized AI services that their existing subscriptions already provide.
Experts recommend mapping out current AI charges and comparing them with what's included in business licenses to avoid redundant spending. According to Ramp, the median company's AI spend is $10.66 per employee per month, which can be absorbed by bundled features.
