Businessman Loses Rs 10.23 Lakh in Cyber Fraud Over WhatsApp Video Call
A 54-year-old businessman from Bodakdev was recently targeted by cyber fraudsters who posed as HSBC officials to extract his credit card details. The victim, Jignesh Patel, had been using an American Express (AMEX) premium credit card for the past two years.
According to his complaint, he saw an HSBC credit card advertisement on YouTube and clicked on it. Soon after, he received a call from an unknown number claiming to be from HSBC's credit card department, offering him a premium card designed for AMEX holders. The fraudsters then asked him to join a WhatsApp video call to complete the process.
During the video call, they instructed him to show both sides of his credit card to the camera, allegedly recording the card details and changing its password in the process. By the end of the day, Rs 10.23 lakh had been withdrawn in multiple transactions.
The fraud came to light around 8 pm when AMEX officials called him about suspicious transactions. This incident serves as a warning for individuals to be cautious while interacting with unknown numbers and clicking on ads online, especially those that seem too good to be true.
