ByteDance Lands Record-Breaking $29.6 Billion Loan at Historic Low Rate
ByteDance, the parent company of popular short-video app TikTok, has secured a massive $29.6 billion syndicated loan at a record-low rate for Chinese tech companies. The loan, nearly 50% larger than its original target of $20 billion, was oversubscribed by more than $30 billion in orders.
The deal is seen as a vote of confidence from international lenders in ByteDance's credit profile, which has been affected by the company's struggles with regulatory issues and headwinds in the US market. Despite these challenges, the company continues to grow its global user base and revenue.
The loan will be used primarily for expanding data centers and other AI infrastructure, with ByteDance considering raising its capital expenditure to as much as $70 billion this year, more than double last year's total. This expansion pace mirrors that of global tech giants such as Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta.
The significance of the transaction extends beyond ByteDance itself, injecting a rare burst of activity into the Asian loan market, which has endured its weakest first half in 16 years.
