California Hikers Rely on Bad Google AI Directions

Three hikers in California found themselves stranded after relying on Google AI directions for their hike. The group, who were attempting to climb Mount Shasta via the Clear Creek Route, contacted the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office for guidance shortly after starting their route.

The sheriff's office advised them to bring less food and water than necessary, but unfortunately, this advice led to a multi-day ordeal. One of the hikers also sustained an injury during the trip, forcing the group to set up camp.

A park ranger team eventually located the stranded hikers and provided medical care before escorting them back to safety.

In a statement, the sheriff's office warned against relying solely on GPS directions for hiking trips. They emphasized that even routes considered non-technical require physical fitness and preparation for unexpected events.
