Canada Edges Out US as Haven for Cheap Consumer Goods

The long-standing trend of higher prices in Canada compared to the US has reversed. Despite ongoing trade tensions, some consumer goods are now cheaper to buy north of the border.

A comparison of over 40 products across various retailers found that Canadian prices consistently lag behind those in the US. This includes popular items such as the Tesla Model 3 premium rear-wheel drive, which is nearly 45% lower in Canada, and the Microsoft Xbox Series X base model, priced 10% cheaper.

The study also highlighted the price disparity for smaller items like Tylenol, Coca-Cola cans, and Swiffer WetJet mops. A 12-pack of Coca-Cola cans costs nearly 30% more in the US, while a bottle of Tylenol extra strength is 27% pricier.

Retail consultant Clay Parnell attributed this shift to Canadian retailers absorbing currency penalties by accepting lower profit margins in Canada. 'If companies fully applied the exchange rate difference, Canadian sales volumes would collapse,' he said.
