Canada Probes Potential Food Safety Risk After India Relabels Products
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is investigating potential risks to imports after Indian authorities discovered a warehouse operation relabelling food products, including PepsiCo's Kurkure puffed chips and Nestle's other goods. The operation in Mumbai involved replacing old dates and nutrition information with fake labels to make the products suitable for export.
Indian officials raided the warehouse last week, seizing nearly US$80,000 worth of products, as well as chemicals and printing machines used in the relabelling process. The affected companies include PepsiCo, Nestle, Coca-Cola, and Unilever.
The CFIA stated that it is monitoring the situation to determine whether it presents any risk to imports into Canada. At this time, the agency has no information indicating that products associated with this operation entered Canada.
