Canada's Data Breach Costs Hit Record High as Energy Sector Tops List

Canadian organizations are facing a record-breaking average cost of CA$7.11 million per data breach, according to the latest IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report.

The report, which covers breaches experienced by 602 organizations between March 2025 and February 2026, found that energy became Canada's most expensive cyber target, averaging CA$9.21 million per breach.

Supply-chain compromise emerged as the largest factor increasing breach costs in Canada, adding approximately CA$367,899 on average.

The report also highlighted the benefits of using AI and security automation extensively, which reduced breach costs by approximately CA$3.41 million and accelerated threat detection, investigation, and prevention.
