Canada's eTA: Who Needs it, How Much it Costs, and Key Rules
Canada's electronic travel authorization (eTA) is a mandatory requirement for certain travelers flying to or transiting through the country. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), an eTA costs CAN$7 and most applications are processed within minutes.
The eTA is linked to the passport used for the application and does not allow individuals to work or study in Canada. To apply, travelers need a valid passport, email address, and accepted payment method.
Travellers from eTA-required countries generally need an eTA and a valid passport to board a flight to Canada. However, those arriving by car, bus, train, or boat do not require an eTA but must carry a valid passport.
Applicants can check their eligibility on the IRCC website before applying. Since May 26, 2026, eligible citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia can apply for an eTA instead of a visitor visa when traveling to Canada by air.
