Cancer Breakthroughs Raise Hopes, but Experts Warn of Chasm Between Efficacy and Effectiveness
Two major cancer breakthroughs have been announced in recent weeks, sparking both hope and caution among medical professionals. Moderna and Merck's personalized mRNA anti-cancer vaccine has shown promise in delaying disease recurrence in patients with melanoma undergoing curative surgery.
The other breakthrough comes from Revolution Medicine, which was approved by the US FDA for a new pancreatic cancer drug called Daraxonrasib. This drug targets the Ras gene and protein, which are often mutated in various types of tumors.
In a study involving over 500 patients with pancreatic cancer who had previously received initial therapy, Daraxonrasib increased survival time from 6.7 to 13.2 months. However, it's essential to note that none of the patients were cured by this treatment, and side effects may be challenging for older patients.
