Cancer Vaccine Breakthrough: Moderna and Merck Achieve Promising Results
A breakthrough in cancer treatment has been achieved by Moderna and Merck, as their personalized cancer vaccine has shown promising results in preventing the return of melanoma. The trial involved over 1,000 patients with localized tumors that were removed surgically but had a high risk of recurrence.
The vaccine trains the immune system to specifically target mutations found only on the tumor, unlike chemotherapy and immunotherapy which can harm healthy cells as well. Merck's Keytruda was used in combination with the mRNA vaccine, and patients received up to nine doses every six weeks. The trial showed a significant reduction in cancer recurrence and spread.
Experts hail this development as a monumental leap forward, validating mRNA technology as a cancer treatment. Personalized cancer vaccines are being tested for other tumor types, including non-small cell lung cancers and bladder cancer. Roche and BioNTech are also working on similar treatments.
