Capital One's Discovery: Slow Growth for Legacy Business Masks Overall Gains

Capital One's acquisition of Discover has led to a significant increase in purchase volume for the combined company. The overall purchase volume grew by 26% in the second quarter of 2026, but this figure masks some important nuances. While Capital One's legacy card business saw a 14% increase in purchase volume during the same period, the legacy Discover business experienced much slower growth, at around 2%. This disparity highlights the challenges faced by Capital One as it integrates Discover's operations into its own.

One of the key goals behind the acquisition was to expand Capital One's transaction processing business and compete more effectively with industry giants Visa (NYSE: V) and Mastercard (NYSE: MA). However, the integration process has not been without its challenges. Capital One is currently upgrading the credit quality of Discover's customer base, which has led to a temporary decline in growth. Management has described this as a 'brownout,' but it appears to be having the intended effect, with the net charge-off rate for Capital One's card business falling 39 basis points between the first and second quarters.

Despite these challenges, investors appear to be pleased with the progress made so far. The company has stated that the integration process will last until at least the second half of 2027, but it seems to be executing well thus far. Shareholders may be encouraged by this development, although it's worth noting that the headline growth number overstates the story.
