Cargo Jet Crashes at Miami Airport, Killing Five
A cargo jet carrying Amazon packages overshot the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, crashing into a van and killing five people inside. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the cause of the crash.
According to flight data, the plane tried to abort an unsteady landing before smashing into the van, which was used by a cleaning service to shuttle crews between planes. The pilot and co-pilot have been released from the hospital but investigators will interview them on Wednesday to determine what happened in the seconds leading up to the crash.
The NTSB is reviewing flight data and cockpit recordings to figure out why the jet overran the runway, which is about 1,300 feet long. The plane was landing after a two-hour flight from Puerto Rico as storms brewed around the Miami airport.
Former FAA official Mike O'Donnell said that by the time the crew tried to abort the landing, it may have been too late if there wasn't enough runway left. He added that it 'almost seems like there was a disagreement between the pilots on what to do.'
