Catalent Deploys AI-Powered Quality Management System on Microsoft Azure
Catalent, a leading provider of drug development and delivery solutions, has implemented an artificial intelligence (AI) system on Microsoft's Azure platform to enhance its quality management processes.
The company chose Microsoft as its partner due to the existing integration with its systems, which allowed for seamless implementation. The AI system, known as Qai, was designed to operate within Catalent's established quality, security, and data governance frameworks, ensuring the protection of sensitive information while enabling investigators to leverage enterprise-wide knowledge and insights.
Catalent values its shared philosophy with Microsoft, prioritizing safe, secure, and ethical AI development that matches its own AI governance model. The company worked closely with Microsoft's team to build a bespoke solution within an ecosystem it already trusted.
The result is a system engineered for regulated environments, where Qai runs inside Catalent's Microsoft Azure environment with human oversight, read-only access, and no creation or modification of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) records. Under the hood, Qai reasons with Azure OpenAI in Foundry models, using retrieval-augmented generation to reason over Catalent's own quality data.
The solution has nearly completed its rollout, with adoption increasing and early indications of productivity and efficiency gains in deviation management. This includes accessing and reusing quality knowledge across the global network, bringing greater consistency to investigations, and freeing experts to address issues earlier rather than just resolving them.
