Caterpillar Gets AiP for MaK Dual-Fuel Conversion Solution
Caterpillar has received approval in principle (AiP) from DNV for its fuel-blending conversion solution for MaK engines, allowing vessels to lower greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%.
The dual-fuel conversion option will be showcased at the 2026 Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine Technology (SMM) event in Hamburg, Germany. This technology enables M 32 and M 43 engines to operate on up to 95% methanol or ethanol by volume, reducing GHG emissions by up to 80% compared to original carbon intensity.
Caterpillar Marine is also highlighting the benefits of converting existing ships to operate on lower-carbon-intensity fuels. This approach allows operators to modernize their fleets while meeting industry requirements and avoiding significant financial penalties.
According to Caterpillar, its dual-fuel expertise, advanced diagnostics, digital solutions, and global service capabilities empower operators to meet evolving industry requirements in practical ways that help curb operational expenses and preserve capital.
