The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged to a record high of over $54,100 on Tuesday, reaching its fourth consecutive session and near 5% increase since July. The index gained more than 900 points, with the largest single-name move belonging to Caterpillar (CAT), which rose 6% after beating second-quarter earnings expectations.

Caterpillar's stock price movement contributed around six index points for every dollar of share price, accounting for nearly a third of the record gain. The company cited equipment demand from data centre buildout and lower-than-expected tariff costs as reasons for its strong performance.

Palantir (PLTR) also rose 27% after reporting second-quarter results driven by sovereign artificial intelligence demand, but it is not part of the Dow Jones index. Other non-index stocks like Micron (MU), Marvell (MRVL), and SpaceX (SPCX) also saw significant gains.

The Treasury Secretary mentioned talks with Tehran about reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which could impact crude oil prices. However, the remarks did not have a lasting effect on the market.
