Caterpillar Roars Ahead on AI-Driven Demand Boom
Caterpillar's stock surged up to 12% in early trading after the company beat second-quarter profit estimates and raised its annual revenue growth forecast.
The equipment giant benefited from a buildout of AI data centers, which has spurred demand for its power-generation and construction equipment. The company's core construction segment saw a 35% revenue growth in the quarter ending June 30, driven by strong retail sales in North America, where it recorded a 50% jump.
Caterpillar also cut its full-year tariff costs forecast to around $2.2 billion from the previously expected $2.2 billion to $2.6 billion. The company's results are often seen as a bellwether for the industrial economy, and this latest forecast suggests that the AI-led demand boom for ancillary equipment is sustainable.
The power and energy arm of Caterpillar posted 17% growth in revenue, while the construction industries segment manufactured excavators and bulldozers. CEO Joe Creed said non-residential investment in critical infrastructure programs, heavy construction, and data centers contributed to overall construction spending levels.
