Caterpillar Stock Slides Amid Regulatory Concerns

Caterpillar's stock took a hit today, sliding 3.8% in mid-day trading to $809.18 after opening at $844.82. This decline comes despite the company's strong second-quarter earnings and raised full-year sales outlook.

The main concern weighing on the stock is regulatory restrictions targeting data center construction across the United States. Analyst Mircea Dobre from Baird downgraded Caterpillar to Neutral from Outperform on July 29, citing New York's moratorium on data center construction as an example of a broader trend.

Caterpillar's power generation segment supplies large diesel and natural gas engines for data center backup power, making regulatory headwinds a significant concern. The stock is also trading at an elevated earnings multiple well above its historical average, leaving it vulnerable to multiple compression if AI infrastructure spending decelerates.
