Charles Herman Newland, an 85-year-old resident of Crest Hill, Illinois, passed away on August 21, 2026. Born on February 24, 1941, in Houston, Minnesota, Newland spent his childhood on a family farm where he developed a strong connection with nature and the simple things in life.
Newland's work ethic was shaped by his upbringing and led him to a nearly 50-year career at Caterpillar Inc. after serving in the US Army and settling in Joliet. He met his wife, Mae Scott, shortly after arriving in Joliet and they shared 57 years of marriage until her passing in 2021.
Newland was an avid sports fan, particularly the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Braves, and enjoyed watching Jeopardy with friends and family. He also had a passion for walking, jogging, and bicycling, often logging significant miles on his bike. In addition to his love of nature, Newland cherished gardening and maintained a beautiful yard with Mae, growing various vegetables that they shared with their community.
