Caterpillar Veteran Charles Newland Passes Away at 85
Charles Herman Newland passed away on August 21, 2026, at the age of 85. Born in Houston, Minnesota, on February 24, 1941, he was raised on a family farm where he developed a strong work ethic and love for nature.
Newland joined Caterpillar Inc. shortly after his honorable discharge from the US Army and went on to have a nearly 50-year career with the company. He met his wife, Mae Scott, in Joliet, Illinois, and they shared 57 years of marriage until her passing in 2021.
Newland was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed walking, jogging, and biking, often logging many miles on his last bike. He also had a green thumb and maintained a beautiful yard with lush landscaping and flowers. In addition to his love for nature, he was a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Braves.
Newland is survived by his sons, Richard and Robert; grandsons, Cody and Shane; sisters, Roberta Warnken, Irene Rislov, and Mary Newland; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Lightways Hospice and Serious Illness Care or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
