Caterpillar's $72 Billion Backlog: A Shift from Construction Cycles
Caterpillar's second-quarter earnings revealed a staggering backlog of $72 billion, representing a 92% year-over-year growth. This significant increase is largely attributed to the AI boom and data centers driving strong demand for large generator sets and turbines.
The company's biggest challenge now lies in its capacity to meet the immense demand, rather than the demand itself. Caterpillar's Power & Energy segment has decoupled from the traditional construction cycle, with approximately 59% of the $72 billion backlog expected to be delivered within the next year.
To address this challenge, Caterpillar plans to restart production of its 10-megawatt gas engine platform, adding about 1.5 gigawatts of capacity as shipments begin before the end of the year.
