Caterpillar's Compaction Algorithm Aims to Optimize Waste Management in Australia
Caterpillar is helping landfill operators in Australia and New Zealand optimize waste compaction using its Compaction Algorithm platform. The company's technology uses telematics and Global Positioning System data to track compactors' routes, ground slope, and changes to a landfill's elevation.
The platform consists of two levels: the Satellite Base Augmentation System, which tracks a compactor's location and passes on each section; and the Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) system, which measures crucial data such as ground slope and elevation changes. The RTK system calculates the difference in elevation between the start and end of compaction.
The Cat Compaction with Compaction Algorithm is available for Caterpillar's 836 and 826 landfill compactor models. The technology has been well-received by waste managers, who are looking to reduce operating costs and optimize their use of space. With landfills in Australia expected to reach capacity by the mid-2030s, efficient waste management is becoming increasingly important.
