Caterpillar's Q2 Profitability Surges Amid Cost Pressures
Caterpillar Inc., a heavy machinery and equipment manufacturer, has reported a significant improvement in its profitability for the second quarter of 2026. The company's adjusted operating margin expanded by around 430 basis points year over year to 21.9%, marking the largest increase since 2024.
This improvement came despite continued cost pressures, including an 18% year-over-year increase in cost of sales due to higher manufacturing expenses. However, Caterpillar was able to offset these costs with increased sales volumes and favorable pricing.
The company's results also benefited from $392 million in expected International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariff recoveries. Management expects full-year 2026 tariff costs to be around $2.2 billion, excluding any additional IEEPA tariff recoveries.
Caterpillar has raised its 2026 outlook, expecting sales and revenues to grow in the mid-to-high teens compared to its previous forecast for low-double-digit growth. The improved outlook reflects healthy demand across all three primary segments.
