Caterpillar's Record Backlog Signals Strong Demand Momentum
Caterpillar Inc.'s second-quarter 2026 results revealed record revenue and earnings growth, but its massive order backlog is perhaps the most significant indicator for investors. The backlog provides insight into future demand and revenue visibility, offering a clearer view of business momentum over the coming quarters.
The company ended the second quarter with a record backlog of $72 billion, 92% higher than last year. This growth was seen across all three segments, reflecting broad-based demand strength throughout Caterpillar's portfolio. Around 59% of this substantial backlog is expected to be delivered within the next 12 months.
This consistent demand momentum has supported management's improved 2026 outlook. Caterpillar now expects mid-to-high teens growth in sales and revenues from 2025, up from its previous expectation of low-double-digit growth.
